The great irony of start-up culture is that it is now one of mimicry, homogeneity, treading a set path. Seeing the bright bulb of Silicon Valley from our transatlantic vantage point we decry the moths that fly towards it, the jarring noise that is generated from it.
We are starting a revolution. Not merely about scaling Europe or attaining growth in the UK. This is a revolution to define the culture of Britain.
In Britain we must introduce a culture of founding — the means to reclaim science, progress, rationalism, a desire for truth from our legacy of polymaths, inventors and great scientists. We have all the raw material but the system cannot see the alchemy that will turn it into gold. This, fundamentally, is the people. The founders. The vanguard.
The popular iconography of the greatest founders obscures their journey, their passage, and presents it as inevitable. We are given a history to only read backwards. This restricts the cast to only the hustlers, the pattern matchers, those who prefer slop over substance. The start-up ecosystem that should activate the UK instead alienates its talent. It prioritises pace over depth, constrains originality and doesn't reward first-principles thinking.
We reject this.
We take founding as a profoundly existential act. A pledge of time, a sacrifice.
We take founding as a profoundly creative act. An inception of something new, an offering.
We take founding as a search for direction. A direction that should be intrinsic, not reactive.
We will generate truly category defining companies.
Founders with a drive so unreasonable and a vision so personal they cannot do anything but act. An orthogonality that can only come from originality.
